In the evolving landscape of girls flag football, two names have begun to shine particularly bright at Gahr High School: Brooklyn Omar and her best friend Camarra Brown-Stanton. As college programs across the nation start offering scholarships for flag football, this dynamic duo is positioning themselves to be at the forefront of this exciting new chapter in women’s sports.
A Friendship Built on Competition
Brooklyn and Camarra’s connection extends back to childhood, where their competitive spirit and natural athletic abilities formed the foundation of a powerful friendship. Now, as high school athletes, they’re turning heads on the flag football field with their chemistry and complementary playing styles.
Brooklyn has established herself as an elite defensive back, known for her ability to read plays and shut down opposing receivers. Camarra excels as a safety, using her field vision to direct the defense and maintain team communication during crucial moments.
Beyond the Field
What sets these young athletes apart isn’t just their performance during games but their dedication off the field. Four days a week, you’ll find Brooklyn and Camarra at “1 More Rep” training facility with Coach Ram, pushing their physical limits and refining their athletic abilities.
Both players understand that athletic success begins in the classroom. With college scholarships now becoming a reality for flag football players, maintaining strong academic performance has become as important as their athletic development.
In Their Own Words
RepMax got a chance to sit down with Brooklyn and ask her a few questions.
Unlike many high school athletes who spread their talents across multiple sports, Brooklyn has chosen to specialize, dedicating herself entirely to flag football. This focused approach allows her to develop specialized skills that give her an edge on the field.
When asked about her motivation, Brooklyn shared, “My drive to excel in sports are my workouts and just being a better player and understanding the game each day. I’m inspired the most by proving to my parents I can accomplish anything I set my goal to be.”
Her approach to the demanding life of a student-athlete is refreshingly straightforward: “I manage by just taking it a day at a time.”
While many young athletes look up to professional sports stars, Brooklyn finds her inspiration closer to home. “My parents [inspire me] because they push me and I watch them excel with life on a day-to-day basis,” she explained.
On the field, Brooklyn sees her role clearly: “I contribute by being the best defensive back I can be on the field. My leadership role is to keep my team motivated on every down.”
RepMax also got a chance to sit down with Camarra and ask her a few questions.
Camarra’s motivation comes from a strong family foundation. “My family drives me to excel in flag football. The support system my parents and siblings provide gives me a strong foundation of confidence. Knowing I will always have someone there supporting me and cheering for me motivates me to keep going and never give up.”
She draws inspiration from her childhood dreams: “Becoming a better person and continuing my dreams that I had as a kid inspires me the most. I’ve always dreamed of going to college for a sport to pursue while still having high academics.”
When it comes to managing the demands of her busy life, Camarra emphasizes organization. “Managing academics, sports, and personal life is always challenging. Being organized and having a plan helps me manage my life more wisely. Just knowing what I have to do and having a plan helps me be more prepared too. Being organized is for sure the most essential thing that helps me be put together.”
Unlike her teammate Brooklyn, Camarra finds inspiration in professional athletes. “The most inspiring to me is Kobe Bryant, personally because of his passion and love towards the sport, making him an overall better athlete. Kobe was an amazing role model for younger generations, hoping one day I can inspire other generations to chase their dreams.”
Camarra’s approach to leadership focuses on communication. “I contribute to my team’s success by communicating and trying to always stay positive. Communicating on the field is hard because you are trying to focus on your job but also commit to the things you see that others might not. As a safety, I feel like I have the most open view of the whole field, so communicating for sure helps change the defensive aspect of the game.”
Looking Toward the Future
As colleges begin developing women’s flag football programs, Brooklyn has clear priorities for her future. “First factor is the flag football program. The coaching is very important based on experience since this is a new sport for young girls. Third, locationβI don’t wanna be too far away from home.”
The excitement of playing in front of large crowds appeals to Brooklyn, who notes, “I think I would want to play in front of a lot of people so I can stand out.”
When it comes to coaching styles, Brooklyn values development over immediate success. “I’d rather play for a coach to develop myself,” she said, adding that her ideal coach would blend strict discipline with player-friendly approaches.
Camarra’s college priorities align with her teammate’s but add a unique perspective: “My three factors when considering a college are athletics, academics, and the opportunities they give to grow in multiple different ways.”
The game-day atmosphere plays an important role in Camarra’s decision-making process: “The fan base and game-day atmosphere will influence my college decision a lot. Personally, because the game-day atmosphere is important because it sets off the mood of how the game is going to be played. If it’s not a positive atmosphere, we won’t be able to work as a team and win as a team. I love the fan base; having a loud, motivating fan base always makes the game more energetic.”
Like Brooklyn, Camarra values growth over immediate success: “I’d rather play for a coach who focuses on player development and long-term growth because, over time, winning will come with the growth. Learning the foundations as a player is important because it helps you understand the game better at different levels.”
Both athletes prefer a training environment that mixes high-intensity competition with skill-focused drills. As Camarra explains, “I love having high-intensity competition because I always felt like going against better competition only makes you better as an athlete overall. The fundamentals of being able to go against the higher levels of competition come with the skill-focused drills.”
A Sport on the Rise
With the growth of girls flag football across the country, Brooklyn and Camarra are positioned at the perfect intersection of opportunity and preparation. Their dedication to improvement, both physically and mentally, exemplifies the rising standard for this emerging sport.
As college programs continue to develop and scholarships become more widely available, these Gahr High School stars represent the exciting future of women’s flag footballβathletes who are ready to take their game to the next level while inspiring the next generation of players.
For Brooklyn Omar and Camarra Brown-Stanton, the journey is just beginning, but their foundation of friendship, hard work, and dedication has already set them on a path toward success, both on and off the field.
