In the competitive world of high school basketball, certain players stand out not just for their athletic prowess, but for their extraordinary mindset and approach to the game. Roman Esparza, the standout Point Guard from Crossroads High School, embodies this rare combination of talent and perspective. In an exclusive interview with RepMax Media, Esparza shares insights into his basketball philosophy, training regimen, and college aspirations that reveal why he’s rapidly becoming one of the most intriguing prospects in youth basketball today.
“How you do anything is how you do everything,” Esparza explained when discussing his approach to balancing academics and athletics – a philosophy that permeates every aspect of his journey toward basketball excellence.
The Making of an Elite Point Guard: Leadership First
Roman Esparza’s identity as a Point Guard runs deeper than simply a position on the court. It’s a leadership role he embraces wholeheartedly.
Q: What position do you play and why do you play that position?
A: “I play Point Guard because I like to lead my team through challenging situations. From my position, I like to find lanes and opportunities to put my players in a situation to excel.”
This leadership mindset extends beyond playmaking. When asked about his contribution to team success, Esparza emphasized a selfless approach that prioritizes winning above personal statistics.
Q: How do you contribute to your team’s success, and what kind of leader do you strive to be?
A: “For me, it’s all about the team. I try to be entirely selfless. I don’t worry about points for me personally because whether I score 6 or 20, all that matters is winning. Did I get my team in a position to be successful? Did I play defense the right way? That’s the perspective and the mindset that I have when I step on the court. If I do my job leading our offense and if I play tough defense, then we should win.”
What leadership qualities do you think are most important for young athletes developing their game today? Have you observed these qualities in players at your school or community?
Finding Inspiration: From Underdogs to Legends
Every elite athlete draws inspiration from somewhere. For Esparza, motivation comes from both family ties and basketball icons who demonstrated extraordinary commitment to excellence.
Q: What drives you to excel in your sport/activity, and who or what inspires you the most?
A: “I have a deep desire to play at the highest level. I’m driven by a passion to challenge myself in difficult environments. I’m inspired by my family and certain players that play with serious passion. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, and Steph Curry are the players that inspire me with their deep commitment to win.”
Among these basketball legends, it’s Stephen Curry whose journey resonates most deeply with Esparza, particularly Curry’s rise from being underestimated to becoming one of basketball’s greatest players.
Q: Which professional athlete or figure do you look up to, and what have you learned from their journey?
A: “I look up to Steph Curry. He was not considered the best prospect coming up so he went to Davidson. He worked really hard and perfected his craft and that made him one of the best point guards in history. I like his story, and I have been inspired by his journey from being somewhat of an underdog to being one of the best to ever play.”

The Balanced Approach: Academics, Athletics, and Development
Perhaps what makes Esparza most impressive is his mature understanding of the interconnectedness between academic excellence and athletic achievement.

Q: How do you manage the demands of being an elite prospect while keeping up with academics and personal life?
A: “For me it’s all connected. How you do anything is how you do everything. I don’t think you can be great at basketball if you’re not really smart. You have to be smart to see the game at a high level. And if you’re smart then you know that academics are very important. Bringing it all together is an imperative.”
This holistic perspective extends to his views on coaching and player development, where Esparza demonstrates remarkable wisdom beyond his years.
Q: Would you rather play for a coach who prioritizes winning above all or one who focuses on player development and long-term growth?
A: “I don’t think it’s an either-or situation but I want to play for a Coach that is all about the team. If you develop players and you focus on growth, then the winning happens naturally.”
Q: What type of coach brings out the best in you—strict and disciplined, more player-friendly, or a mix of both?
A: “I am comfortable with all types of coaches. Two of my favorite coaches are notoriously tough. They scream and yell but they mean well and they don’t let you get away with mistakes. They hold you to a high standard and I love that. I have had other coaches that are less tough and have a more relaxed style and I am good with that too. I am grateful that I have had several coaches that I am close with. For me it’s about the bond and I play my best when the relationship is solid and built on trust.”

The College Decision: Prioritizing Growth and Development
As an elite basketball prospect, Esparza’s approach to selecting a college reflects his thoughtful nature and commitment to personal development.
Q: What are the top three factors you’re considering when choosing a college (e.g., academics, athletics, culture, location)?
A: “The baseline is a great academic institution. That is the starting point as I want to be at a place where I can get a great education. From there, it’s about the Coaching Staff and the environment. I want to be in a place where development is a priority because getting a little better every day is the goal. If we have those things then the culture should be solid and I will be happy to thrive in that type of environment.”
While many young athletes might be swayed primarily by fan atmosphere or program prestige, Esparza maintains a balanced perspective.
Q: How much does the fan base and game-day atmosphere influence your college decision?
A: “I really love a great crowd and the support you feel when the energy is high. Having said that, I always block those things out once I step on the court. So it’s a balancing act in that I want to gather that energy and then lock into the game.”

Training Philosophy: Intensity and Purpose
Esparza’s approach to training embodies the same purposeful intensity that characterizes his overall basketball philosophy.
Q: What does your ideal training environment look like—high-intensity competition, skill-focused drills, or a mix of both?
A: “Has to be high intensity and fast paced. Usually a combination of skill work to start, then getting shots up and drills that mimic in-game situations. Then intense competitions to see where everyone is at.”
