High School Football Showcases: Unearthing Future Stars and Fueling College Dreams!

By Martel Battle, RepMax Sports Analyst

The high school football showcase circuit was in full swing this past week, and I had a front-row seat to witness the incredible talent brewing in California. From May 5th to May 8th, I hit three major showcases, each buzzing with electrifying energy, top-tier athletes, and college coaches on the hunt for their next program-defining stars. These events are more than just drills and one-on-ones; they are critical platforms for these young men to display their skills, connect with recruiters, and take a tangible step towards their collegiate aspirations. The ultimate goal? Landing that coveted scholarship. And let me tell you, with the talent on display, many dreams are about to become reality.

Kicking Off in Bakersfield: Nullem and the Campbell Brothers Shine

My week started on Monday, May 5th, at the Bakersfield Showcase hosted by Frontier High School. The Central Valley always produces tough, physical players, and this showcase was no exception. Standing out immediately was Harlem Nullem, a dominant force on both the offensive and defensive lines. His raw power and agility were evident, marking him as a top prospect to watch. Quarterback Brady Campbell showcased a strong arm and good decision-making, while his brother, offensive lineman Carsten Campbell, impressed with his technique and tenacity in the trenches. These athletes, and many others, put on a solid performance, setting the tone for a week of high-caliber football.

Star Power at Sierra Canyon & Newbury Park: Wesley, Finney Jr., and Smigiel Dazzle

Tuesday, May 6th, took me to the highly anticipated Sierra Canyon and Newbury Park showcase. This event was absolutely packed, a testament to the elite talent on display. The atmosphere was electric, and several big-name commitments certainly lived up to the hype.

Recent Oregon commit, defensive end Richard Wesley from Sierra Canyon, was a force to be reckoned with. His explosiveness off the edge and relentless pursuit of the quarterback solidified why he’s Pac-12 bound. His teammate, defensive back Havon Finney Jr., an LSU commit, demonstrated exceptional coverage skills and athleticism, proving why the Tigers secured his talents early. And then there was quarterback Brady Smigiel of Newbury Park, a recent Michigan commit, who put on a clinic with his pinpoint accuracy and command of the offense. These three truly put on a show!

But the established stars weren’t the only ones turning heads. Also from Sierra Canyon, 2026 safety Madden Riordan (USC commit) showed why he’s highly touted with his instincts and coverage ability, and his 2026 teammate, WR Massiah Mingo, displayed electrifying speed and playmaking ability. Vincent Carner, a big 6’3″ wide receiver from Newbury Park, caught my eye with his polished route-running and ability to make contested catches. He’s a name you’ll want to remember. From Sierra Canyon, running back Jaxson Stokes was incredibly impressive with his explosive, smooth movements in and out of cuts. His agility and burst are sure to cause problems for defenses this fall. The depth of talent at this particular showcase was simply outstanding.

Western Showcase: A Deep Dive into SoCal’s Elite Talent Pool

The week culminated on Thursday, May 8th, at the Western Showcase, a massive event featuring programs like Western High School, Long Beach Poly, Leuzinger High School, and Segerstrom High School.

Leuzinger High School brought some serious heat, led by top prospect Samu Moala. This 2026 defensive end/edge rusher is a consensus four-star recruit, standing at an imposing 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds. His physical presence and skill set are already drawing national attention from major services like 247Sports and On3.com. Another Leuzinger standout was senior Journee Tonga, listed at running back and free safety. Tonga reportedly had a monster 2024 season and his versatility was on full display.

Western High School also showcased some elite prospects. Quarterback Chance Thomas who just recently lock in a offer from UNC showed why he is a elite passer. Keep an eye on Maxwell “Bunchie” Young, a dynamic wide receiver and cornerback from the class of 2026, and the versatile Ernest Nunley, a 6’1″, 185-pound three-star defensive back and wide receiver.

Long Beach Poly, a name synonymous with football excellence, presented a new wave of talent. Class of 2027 defensive back Donte’ Wright Jr., already boasting an impressive 6’2″ frame, looks like a future star. Athlete JuJu Johnson showcased his playmaking ability, and 2026 Cal cornerback commit Deon Jackson demonstrated why the Golden Bears are excited to have him.

College Coaches Out in Force: The Scholarship Dream

Across all three showcases, one thing was abundantly clear: 40+ college coaches were out in full force. From combine drills to intense one-on-one battles, these coaches were meticulously evaluating talent, looking for the next additions to their rosters. It was fantastic to see several athletes walk away with college offers on the spot – a direct result of their hard work and the platform these showcases provide.

This is the crux of it all, athletes. These showcases provide an unparalleled opportunity to get noticed. Every position on the field is under the microscope. When you have the attention of these college coaches, you HAVE to do your part. You have to PERFORM. You have to STAND OUT. This is your moment.
