By M.B – High School Sports Insider November 23, 2024The stakes couldn’t be higher tonight as Southern California’s prep football heavyweights collide in what promises to be an unforgettable evening of high school football. I’ve been covering prep sports for years, and let me tell you – the electricity in the air is palpable.

GAME OF THE YEAR: #1 MATER DEI vs. CORONA CENTENNIAL

Walking through the Monarch’s practice this week, you could feel something special brewing. Head Coach Frank McManus had his squad laser-focused, and for good reason. This Mater Dei team (11-0) isn’t just winning – they’re demolishing opponents. “We respect Centennial, but we’re ready for war,” senior RB Jordon Davison told me after Wednesday’s practice. The Michigan commit has been absolutely terrorizing defenses, and my sources at several D1 programs say he’s the real deal.

KEY MATCHUP TO WATCH: Centennial’s secondary vs. Mater Dei’s passing attack. The Huskies’ DBs have been stellar, but they haven’t faced anything like this Monarch aerial assault.

PLAYERS WHO’LL DECIDE IT:

  • Husan Longstreet (Centennial QB) – The USC commit has been on fire lately. His 19:4 TD-to-INT ratio tells only part of the story.
  • Nasir Wyatt (Mater Dei DB) – My pick for Orange County Defensive Player of the Year
  • Marcus Brown (Mater Dei QB) – The junior has ice in his veins

INSIDER’S SLEEPER: Keep your eyes on Centennial’s sophomore WR Marcus Williams. Word from practice is he’s been unstoppable on the scout team.

BATTLE IN THE TRINITY LEAGUE: ST. JOHN BOSCO vs. ORANGE LUTHERAN

After last week’s stunning defeat to Mater Dei, Bosco’s practice intensity was off the charts. Coach Jason Negro had his team running extra reps until sunset.“That loss lit a fire under us,” Braves QB Koa Malau’ulu shared exclusively. “Lutheran’s getting our best shot.”

GAME-CHANGERS:

  • TJ Lateef (Lutheran QB) – Dual-threat nightmare who’s been climbing recruiting boards
  • Carson Clark (Bosco WR) – Most underrated receiver in SoCal
  • Dutch Horisk (Bosco DL) – Beast mode engaged after last week’s wake-up call

INSIDER’S TAKE: My sources in Orange Lutheran’s camp say they’ve installed some new wrinkles in their offense specifically for Bosco. Coach Rod Sherman had the team practicing in complete silence to prepare for the Braves’ notorious crowd noise.

UNDER-THE-RADAR STAR: Steve Chavez (Lutheran RB) has been quietly averaging 7.2 yards per carry. “He’s our secret weapon,” one Lutheran assistant told me off the record.

PREDICTION TIME

After watching both teams’ practices and speaking with coaches and players all week, here’s my take:

Mater Dei 35, Corona Centennial 28

  • Davison breaks a long TD run late to seal it
  • Longstreet throws for 300+ in defeat

St. John Bosco 31, Orange Lutheran 24

  • Malau’ulu bounces back with 3 TDs
  • Lutheran keeps it closer than the experts think

SIDELINE NOTES

  • Several top college coaches expected in attendance, including assistants from USC, Oregon, and Ohio State
  • Weather forecast: Perfect football conditions, 68Β° at kickoff
  • Both games sold out by Tuesday – largest expected crowd this season

Remember folks, in my 15 years covering SoCal prep football, nights like this don’t come around often. These are the games these kids will remember for the rest of their lives.

See you under the lights.
